Holiday travel for the US July 4th holiday will likely be down this year due to fuel prices. The food vs. fuel debate continues... Corn prices have spiked affecting the cost to feed the livestock traditionally barbecued on this holiday.

Prices are rising and making it difficult to pay for food, gas and utilities. Recession, stagflation or an economic depression? Regardless, many "working class" people are responding to these challenging times by cutting luxuries and delaying major purchases and travel.

Countries that normaly export rice (India, Vietnam, China, Egypt and Cambodia) have reduced their exports in order to alleviate their domestic prices. The chain reactions of restricting the amount of rice on the global market has made it to the US. Worried shoppers are buying up rice in California's Asian supermarkets and prices have risen almost 70% since the start of 2008.

The global food supply crisis is causing many countries to rethink the biofuel mandates. Crop production for bio-fuel means reductions in grain and soy growing, which (along with market speculation) leads to an increase in prices.
New attention is being given to affordable grains versus the need for renewable energy from biofuels.

Greenhouse gas emissions from international air travel are not restricted under the Kyoto Protocol. Yet air travel is a large carbon dioxide producer.

Terrapass is one of the carbon offset companies funding clean energy and other projects designed to decrease carbon emissions in other industries. It funds projects throughout the U.S., including wind farms, biomass energy, and electricity from animal and plant material.

Environmental advocacy is going beyond the activists rallies. Individual responsibility and contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change is being recognized. Will
consumer behaviour change to reduce consumption? Reducing the consumption of goods and services is a goal of environmentalists to achieve sustainability. What is the economic impact of the reductions? Who will set the global greenhouse gas budget? Will it be based on today's consumption per country or some future ideal "equitable" allocation of carbon dioxide equivalents.

Will we be forced to purchase carbon offsets as a new tax? Will the do-it-yourself crowd be allowed any thoreauvian-lifestyle deductions for their vegetarian diet or backyard garden?

We have hit a few bumps during the race for alternatives to fossil fuels. First generation biofuels have limitations including threatening food supplies and biodiversity.

Lifecycle analysis of the production of ethanol from corn and biodiesel from soy shows only modest net energy gains when you subtract the energy costs of fuel production, pesticide use, transportation, and by-products that remain.

Second generation biofuels are being developed to attempt a transition to producing more sustainable feedstocks. Cellulosic ethanol made from grasses like switchgrass, prairie grasses, or Sugarcane bagasse waste is emerging as the favorite to overcome the environmental and economic challenges.

Leap Day

The tradition of women proposing on 29th February each leap year goes back to when courtship rules were strict. The leap year day was ignored (lept over) in English law and had no recognition. Because the day had no legal status, it was assumed that traditions also had no status. Making it okay for a woman to propose marriage to a man, one day every four years.

Louisiana crawfish come from the Atchafalaya Basin or farm-raised often in conjunction with rice production.

It is that time of year when responsible citizens provide for that discretionary budget that is spent by our elected representatives to run this experiment in federalism.

"A pyramid unfinished." Some conspiracy theorists believe that "the all seeing eye" atop the pyramid as seen in the "Great Seal of the United States" is a Masonic symbol. The 'Eye of Providence' (in a triangle) and the pyramid are found separately in ritual. But the combination of Eye and pyramid in not significant outside of the Seal.
